Origin of this Opal

Coober Pedy is the international capital for crystal opal or white opal in the world.

The two types of opal are distinguished by the fact that white opal is opaque in that the color rests on the surface of the opal and is not translucent.

Crystal opal is more translucent which gives it great depth and intrigue, creating this arresting display of opal color.

Often it is actually Opalized shells from ancient inland seas.

Crystal opal is mainly from Coober Pedy but of course it is also found in most of the other opal fields including Lightning Ridge, Andamooka and the Queensland opal fields. Actually all Australian opal is similar in structure.

The various types are categorized by what they are associated with. If the crystal opal has black potch in the background, it’s black opal. If it has dark brown to black ironstone in the background it is black boulder opal. If it has darkness within itself it becomes black crystal.

Please note that crystal opal is not easy to photograph. If it has a light background it loses a lot of it’s color. If it’s shown on a black background it can give the illusion that it’s darker than it really is which is the case in some of these shots . So please feel free to discuss the stone with us before purchase to make sure you understand the color status.
