Black Opal Ring
You might ask, what is a black opal ring? The color of this stone is obviously not black so why the confusing terminology. Well, the fact of the matter is that when they were first discovered in Lightning Ridge Australia over a 100 years ago, the stone had characteristics different from the traditional ‘look’ of opal.
To Europeans, opals from the now defunct mines in Hungary (now Slovakia) were always of a pale, jelly-like color but this stone had a very dark to black background. Hence, the only way they could think to describe this new gem was to call it black opal. Meaning that it was black in the background, giving it a much darker and brighter appearance than the more pale, delicate stones, which of course have a beauty of their own.
